THIS IS THE LIFE WE CHOSE
Here's a picture of Jon Chapple in a white boiler suit.
Jon played a cover of Johnny Cash's 'Boy Named Sue', sang a Carter Family song through the skin of a snare drum held in front of his face, and closed the set with a tearing, Shellacesque number that bodes very nicely for whatever you might be hoping for. Will the suit stay? Place your bets.
Thanks also to Big Joan and Vialka: the former, a tight, percussive math-rock ensemble that would seem rather stern and masculine, were you to ignore Annette Becker, a statuesque Germanic frontwoman who reels trance-like around the stage, screams into a telephone receiver and plays a conviniently-placed dustbin with drumsticks; the latter, a frenzied avant-jazz fantasy sprung from the loins of a drunken, wispy-bearded Cossack and a cranberry-sipping, Madonna-miked anarchist milkmaid, criss-crossing the world with nothing but two Interrail tickets, a guitar, and pile of gleaming cymbals - Vialka, we salute you, and hope you come back soon.
